Three different motor topologies, (1) radial, (2) axial and (3) transverse flux, are investigated for 'in-wheel' electric propulsion system. The design constraints are: 350mm/spl times/100mm package limitation, 48 V DC bus restriction and per phase inverter current limited to 500 A/sup pk/. In addition, magnet pole pairs are fixed to 9 due to limitation in 'position sensor' capacity. The paper summarizes results obtained from analytical design followed by 2D and 3D static and transient finite element analysis accompanied with experimental verification for the radial flux topology.
