Pulse width modulation (PWM) control is one of the main sources of motor torque sideband harmonics. For 3-module permanent synchronous motors in a healthy state, conventional methods achieve the cancellation of all torque sideband harmonics except for 3 times the switching frequency and its integer multiples by applying a phase shift of 2π/3 between the sub-modules. However, a sub-module in a subhealth state, such as over-temperature, will run at reduced power. At this point, the traditional method is not suitable. An adaptive carrier phase-shift PWM (ACP-PWM) is proposed to achieve optimal suppression of the torque sideband harmonics under different conditions to solve this problem. First, the torque sideband harmonics generated by the PWM voltage excitation of each sub-module are analytically calculated. Second, the results of torque sideband harmonic suppression for different combinations of carrier phase shift angles are derived. Then, an optimal suppression criterion (OSC) is designed to perform the phase shift angle solution to minimize the torque sideband harmonic peaks within the 4 times switching frequency. Finally, the experimental results verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.
