According to the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration, over half of vehicle-related fatalities on the US roads were due to vehicle road departures. The Road Departure Mitigation System (RDMS) is the latest technology in the Advanced Driver Assistive System (ADAS) to address this issue. Existing RDMSs mostly rely on the presence of clear lane markings. The effectiveness of these RDMS might be lower if there are no lane/road edge markings or no clear lane/road edge markings. Since many roads in the US do not have a road edge marking or no clear road edge marking, it becomes necessary for the RDMS to use roadside objects such as metal guardrail as a reference to detect vehicle road departures. Since testing RDMS with real roadside objects is difficult, it is essential to create a testing environment consisting of soft, resilient and reusable surrogates that can mimic all representative characteristics of the real object when inspected visually or with sensors such as radar and LiDAR. One common roadside object in the U.S, which occupies almost 8.68% of roadside space, is the metal guardrail. This paper illustrates a process for finding the Automotive Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) characteristics of metal guardrails. This result can be used as the IR specification for developing the metal guardrail surrogate that is essential for RDMS development and testing.
