A careful analysis of potential applications of ultrafast optoelectronic technology reveals that some of the more near-term applications in fact do not have anything to do with high speed. Instead, they utilize some other characteristics of ultrashort laser pulses such as large spectral bandwidth, high intensity, short coherence length, timing stability or repetition rate. In this talk, we discuss which ultrafast applications this "paradigm shift" has stimulated and review progress in this field. In particular, we discuss the use of ultrashort light pulses for semiconductor wafer processing, confocal imaging, T-ray imaging, gas monitoring, ranging, coherence tomography, and for wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) in optical communications.
