In this article, a new characteristic of improving the winding factor of permanent magnet vernier motors (PMVMs) with unevenly split modulation tooth (USMT) structure is discovered, based on which PMVMs with different magnetic gear ratios, different numbers of modulation teeth, and different modulation tooth structures, including the evenly split modulation tooth (ESMT) and USMT structures, are investigated and analyzed. First, by the slot phasor diagram analysis, it is found that PMVMs adopting USMT structure can lead to a winding factor improvement compared with those using ESMT structure, and an unevenly distributed slot phasor diagram is thus proposed based on USMT structure. Then, the performances of several PMVMs are analyzed analytically considering the severe interpole flux leakage of PMVM and further analyzed taking the winding factor improvement by USMT structure into account. A comprehensive evaluation is introduced, by which several PMVMs are chosen for comparison further, among which a PMVM adopting USMT structure, with 18 modulation teeth and 34 permanent magnet (PM) poles, is proven to show a balanced performance. A prototype of this PMVM is built and tested to verify the theoretical and the simulation results.
