In this paper, we address enabling technologies for 40 Gbit/s terrestrial WDM and long haul systems, with span lengths of at least 80 km. The impact of modulation formats, adaptive dispersion compensation, distributed Raman amplification, and next-generation system fibers is discussed. Results of early 40 Gbit/s technology trials and an all-Raman transmission of 1.28 Tbit/s (32/spl times/40 Gbit/s) over 2240 km dispersion-managed fiber spans are also presented.
