The growing prosperity of India’s urban areas has made car ownership a necessity. This has led to an unexpected civil society problem: traffic control and vehicle identification. Due to the increased number of cars on the roads today, parking lots are congested. Vehicle license plate recognition systems (VNPR) play a key role in addressing these issues, from parking permits to city traffic monitoring to car theft tracking. The development of this system makes it easier to keep records and use them when needed. The objective of this research is to design an automatic identification system for identification of number from vehicle number plate which is based on embedded platform. A number of VNPR systems based on various methods are now available. This process basically consists of phases: localization and character recognition. The haar cascade classifier is used for license plate recognition. Segmentation of images is done by using image segmentation process. To identify characters, optical character recognition is used. The performance of VNRR system is tested against a data set –JPEG image. This system can be used for different type of applications like toll booths.
