It is generally believed that there is in practice no way to decrypt a random phase encrypted volume holographic data storage system unless the original random phase plate for the encryption is available. Here we demonstrate that under certain conditions, there are still ways to decrypt an encrypted LiNbO/sub 3/ crystal holographic storage system. In addition to presenting experimental evidence for such a decryption, problems and difficulties in the experiments are discussed.
