Over the last few years, autonomous shipping has become an increasingly important aspect of research. Inland navigation differs from navigation at sea in terms of highly restricted routes with a high traffic density and narrow junctions. For the development of route planning and safety systems for autonomous ships, traffic conditions on the waterways are of utmost relevance. Even though autonomous ships are currently not operating along the Rhine, traffic data is already available and can assist the development of such systems. In this work, data received via the Automatic Information System (AIS) are used to analyze the traffic on the Rhine at selected junctions. The traffic density is analyzed as well as possibly dangerous situations, e. g. overtaking or encountering maneuvers, are examined. For the investigations, counting planes are placed in the river axis, over which individual legs are detected. For the analysis of further maneuvers, the data are sorted temporally and geographically with sorting algorithms, to detect these maneuvers.
