In this study, a methodology to optimize the arrival time accuracy in descent trajectory is discussed. In the descent trajectory, about half of aircraft are not equipped with a function to automatically satisfy a required time of arrival (RTA). To have these aircraft capable of future time-based operations, a pseudo-RTA strategy is proposed. In addition, by introducing a metering waypoint at which the flight time error is measured and the flight speed is adjusted to meet the required time at the terminal point. Through theoretical investigations, it is revealed possible to optimize the metering waypoint position to minimize the flight time error. The flight time accuracy optimization strategy is clearly demonstrated through a set of experiment using actual flight data. Its optimization mechanism is also discussed, and its methodology is clearly presented.
