The thermal and tribological properties of an uncoated AISIM3 HSS cutting insert and one coated with multilayer are investigated in this work. On tool steel, turning experiments were performed at three cutting speeds of 56, 88, and 112m/min, three feed of 0.065,0.165, and 0.265 mm/rev, and three cutting depths (0.2, 0.5 and 0.7 mm). Temperature changes at the tool–work piece contact, flank wear breadth, and tool life were all measured. During cutting, the multi-layer coating is proven to considerably minimize temperature and flank wear. The life time of coated insert is about one time longer compared to uncoated insert. The effects of coatings and turning conditions on cutting performance were studied using analysis of variance (ANOVA). The greatest value of the grey relational grade for multilayer coated HSS cutting insert, 56m/min, and 0.065 mm/rev, and 0.2mm is found in the response Table of the average grey relational grade.
