Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University is scheduled to begin using Cessna 172 and Piper Seminole level 6 flight training devices (FTDs) in flight training courses beginning in September of 2002. The devices are being built by Frasca International, Inc. Each device duplicates the airplane from the pilot's seat forward and will model a Cessna 172 aerodynamic profile. A visual system and a control loading system are included. The visual system presents a computer generated horizontal 220 degree field of view and contains a data base of major features in the area within 50 miles of the Daytona Beach International Airport. A unique aspect of the visual system is that it presents a realistic "out the window" view from each of the pilot seats.
