Summary form only given. Systems engineers specify how systems work and operate, and what their environments are like. This information must then be conveyed to software, especially for remote systems, where software acts as the systems engineers' surrogate. Naturally, as autonomy grows, the required alignment between the systems and software engineering increases sharply. However, there has been historically a large gulf between these two disciplines. The resulting communication problems are compounded severely, as complexity grows. This presentation explains the factors driving this issue to prominence, and then describes ways to address the issue with architecture, processes, and tools that help bridge the gap.
