The impact of inter-phase resistance imbalance in feedforward current controlled permanent magnet synchronous motor drives (PMSM) drives is presented in this paper. A mathematical model incorporating unbalanced phase resistances is derived from fundamental principles to describe the behavior of PMSMs in the stationary and synchronously rotating reference frames. The interaction of the current control system with the motor is explained thereafter utilizing the analytical machine model through the derivation of the expressions for the generated currents and torque of the machine as a function of the corresponding commands to the motor drive. The analysis is then used to provide insight into techniques for mitigating the undesirable current and torque pulsations due to resistance imbalance with feedforward current control. The analysis is validated through simulation and experimental results on a practical PMSM drive system.
