The brushless DC (BLDC) motors with integrated Hall sensors provide simple control, less cost, and improved performance over a broad range of operations. However, the fault in the hall sensor halts the performance of the motor. Regarding the above concern, this article reports a simple fault detection scheme that utilizes two fault indicators: generalized fault indicator (GFI) and hall fault indicator (HFI), to detect and localize the hall sensor fault, respectively. The two faulty hall states are utilized to continuously monitor the hall fault in the system compared to the healthy states. Thereby, the GFI is utilized to raise the hall fault indication flag in the system, when faulty hall states appear. Afterward, the HFI assists to localise the hall fault and raise the respective hall fault flag based on the computation of the moving average value of all the hall fault signals. The BLDC drive system is operated in closed-loop speed control and thereby, loop interactions are taken into account. The experimental verification is carried out on the 1 kW BLDC drive system.
