New challenges for crash sensing are emerging along with the innovation and improvement of restraint systems. A crash sensing system must meet the increasing demands of performance in future restraint systems with precision and flexibility. In this paper, the sensing problems encountered in the design of automotive occupant restraint systems are discussed. The paper also addresses the requirements of crash sensing systems. Sensing criteria and strategies for an intelligent crash sensing system are reviewed and presented.
