We report about the investigation of two-dimensional electromagnetic bandgap structures in a slab arrangement for millimetre wave frequencies made from high resistive silicon. We investigate both waveguiding modes of a line defect and resonant modes of a point defect with respect to possible applications in integrated millimetre wave circuits. We observed that a line defect can act as a broadband, low transmission loss waveguide, and that a resonant cavity mode can be excited with a varying quality factor when certain lattice elements around the cavity are displaced. In addition, the excitation of line defect modes by coplanar transmission lines was demonstrated.
