Amtrak's High Speed Trainset Project Office is responsible for overseeing the design, manufacture and delivery of a fleet of twelve to eighteen high-speed trainsets, fifteen high-speed electric locomotives and state-of-the-art maintenance facilities in Washington, New York and Boston (USA). In addition, the Project Office will oversee the implementation of a management services maintenance contract where the carbuilder will be responsible for all maintenance of the trainsets for an initial period of 10 years. The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of the high-speed trainset program, including the history of the program, the current status of the various program elements, and the schedule to start revenue service. In addition, the authors intend to briefly review the technology being used on the trainset and locomotive systems.
