Dual fuel hydrogen vehicles provide a flexible solution for fleet operations as they can still operate for periods without hydrogen. This can lower the costs of deploying hydrogen energy based transportation systems in the field as the storage and generation capacities can become more realistic to deploy, supporting vehicles from standalone renewable energy sources, such as wind turbines and arrays of photovoltaic panels. However, it is not obvious to determine how much generation and storage capacity should be provided. Therefore a study has been undertaken utilising telemetry data and prediction of energy generation and usage to determine how to dimension such systems and optimise their operation. This paper summarises the results and findings of the trials with seven hydrogen/diesel dual fuel vehicles.
