The paper presents a new reactive power control methodology for interleaved totem-pole converters. With the use of the proposed adaptive phase shift modulation, the resulting four-quadrant electric vehicle system can achieve efficient power conversion, optimized current quality, and best cost control furthering its potential to be utilized to improve grid reactive power quality. Different from the traditional interleaved modulation, the proposed adaptive phase shift modulation is a hybrid modulation method that optimizes the grid side current quality in terms of zero crossing distortion, high-frequency current ripple, and harmonic distribution. The low impedance return path of the traditional totem-pole PFC is maintained to eliminate leakage current. Therefore, while supporting reactive power injection, the constructed power converter can maintain a simple structure but with high stability and effective power transmission. This paper presents a detailed system analysis, including circuit operation, steady-state characteristics, and design criteria. To analyze the feasibility, the performance of the proposed control strategy is successfully verified via PLECS system simulation. Both steady state and dynamic characteristics are shown in good agreement with the theoretical knowledge.
