The availability of 1.25- to 2-/spl mu/m InGaAsP/InP distributed-feedback lasers opens the way to sensitive, room-temperature trace-gas monitoring with applications in medical diagnostics, pollution monitoring, security, and factory-process control. InGaAsP/lnP distributed-feedback (DFB) lasers have been highly developed at 1.3 and 1.55 /spl mu/m for fiber-optic communications. The same techniques can be used to make single-mode lasers operating from about 1.25 to 2.0 /spl mu/m. Employing these devices as sources for laser absorption spectroscopy, many molecules having absorption bands in this wavelength interval can be detected with /spl les/ ppm-meter sensitivity.
