In Eastern Asia, from Pakistan/India to Japan, the emission of suspended particulate matter (SPM) is increasing at a high rate. Its contribution will overtake the amount emitted by natural sources in 2000, and the amount will be doubled by 2020. Due to its importance, AGE-Asia, an international aerosol monitoring program is planned for the beginning of the 21st century. The source of aerosol is classified into two groups: natural and anthropogenic. The latter is the cause of the air pollution. The total emission amount of SPM is difficult to estimate. The paper discusses the use of lidars in measuring aerosol characteristics.
