Summary form only given. Single-mode fibers with high normal dispersion at 1550 nm are becoming widely used for dispersion compensation in fiber-optic transmission. The chromatic dispersion of this type of fiber having a complex refractive-index profile and high /spl Delta/n is primarily determined by the fiber waveguide properties. It is expected therefore that even small variations of the field distribution of the fundamental mode caused by fiber bending can affect the dispersion. In the present paper, we study this effect in view of its significance to fiber evaluation and packaging, and also the possible impact on the fiber manufacturing.
