The snow-covered information, including snow-covered area, snow depth and snow water equivalent have been extracted from the remote sensing imagery of CBERS-02 satellite over the area of Jiaodong Peninsula in west Shandong Province, one of the snowiest regions in China. Based on the pre-processing of remote sensing data of CBERS-02 imagery, the statistical analysis of spectral characteristics has been made. The effect of clouds is removed through a given threshold algorithm and the data interpolation is conducted in the missing area. By computing the normalized difference snow index (NDSI), the snow-covered area is identified. Furthermore, sixty samples are selected to establish the model of remote sensing inversion calculation for snow depth. The experimental study is also carried out for the estimation of snow water equivalent. The results show that the remote sensing data of CBERS-02 imagery has better applicability in monitoring the temporal and spatial variations of snow-covered conditions.
