An improved class of angular rate-based coning algorithms is presented to promote coning correction performance. Through revising the previous coning correction form in the subsample series order, an improved coning correction form is constructed. Then the least squares method is introduced into the design of an improved coning algorithm (LSRI) based on the improved correction form. This improved form allows it to be used for developing another coning algorithm (FTRI) designed using the frequency Taylor-series method. A type of error model is defined for the algorithm performance evaluation under coning and oscillation environments for the new algorithms and the previous angular rate-based algorithms (FTR and FTRI*). The LSRI algorithm is more balanced than the FTRI algorithm in coning accuracy over a common oscillation range. It is superior to the FTRI algorithm in high-frequency performance. The FTRI algorithm is superior to the previous FTR and FTRI* algorithms in coning performance with the same algorithm sample. The increase of the number of algorithm samples (less than 5) accelerates the superiority of the LSRI and FTRI algorithms.
