Computer data links employing high reliability CD-type lasers operating at 780 nm have become quite popular over the past few years because they have made high data rate fiber links affordable. A new optical source, the Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser (VCSEL), is now becoming available with similar characteristics to the current CD-type laser. However, the VCSEL promises the added advantages of higher data rates (up to 5 Gb/s), surface emitting structure to provide for wafer level testing which reduces manufacturing costs and narrow beam emission to provide simplified coupling into multimode fibers. Today's standard link specifications provide for complete interoperability between popular CD-type lasers (780 nm) and the new 850 nm VCSEL devices now arriving in the marketplace.
