Recently we have presented the design concepts and initial progress towards the implementation of a database filter using free space optical interconnects and smart pixel arrays based on vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) and heterojunction phototransistors (HPTs). In addition to the development of HPT logic gate arrays (XOR and AND), demonstration of the database filter requires VCSEL arrays, a suitable opto-mechanical platform, and an emulator for the page oriented optical memory. All of these tasks have now been completed and this paper presents an overview of the system design with emphasis on the optical power budget, and critical device characteristics. Finally, experimental results from a demonstration of both the selection and projection modules will be presented.
