The chemical oxygen iodine laser (COIL) is the first CW chemical laser utilizing electronic transitions and it is most attractive short wavelength chemical laser system with very good scalable ability, excellent beam quality, high efficiency, great energy storage density, narrow emission line and good transfer performance in optical fibers at present which can lead to various potential applications in industrial and scientifically interesting even in medical fields. We used the small scale CW COIL as a probe laser to measure the small signal gain in supersonic COIL based on their identical wavelength and achieved a two dimensional spatial distribution of small signal gains. The measurement of spatial distribution of small signal gain is necessary for improving the laser beam quality with good cavity design.
