NASA, FAA and a number of industry partners conducted flight tests and demonstrations of airport capacity and safety enhancement technologies at the Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport (ATL) during August, 1997. As part of this team effort, Rockwell Collins provided avionics for the NASA Low-Visibility Landing and Surface Operations (LVLASO) system that was deployed on NASA's Boeing 757 Research Aircraft. Among the systems supplied and supported were differential (D)GPS, VHF data links for DGPS, traffic and runway status information uplink broadcast, Mode-S for ADS-B and Controller Pilot Data Link Communications (CPDLC), and a LCD head-down taxi display. This paper describes how these avionics elements were used in the LVLASO system and provides test results on data link and DGPS performance.
