We show a new polarization switching dynamics in VCSELs. A polarization preserving optical feedback induces a random anticorrelated hopping between the two orthogonal linearly polarised (LP) modes of the VCSEL. The mode hopping is complemented with high frequency oscillations at the external-cavity (EC) frequency, as well as frequency random hops between EC modes that are linearly polarized. A theoretical analysis on the basis of rate equations shows a good qualitative agreement with our experiment.
