The mission and performance demands result in more complex naval ship systems. This increased complexity causes the ship control systems being faced with unprecedented challenges. This paper presents a brief introduction of navy efforts for ship survivability and effectiveness, and reviews academic research works on the aspects of modeling and simulation, control architecture, open architecture computing environment and dependent intelligent reconfigurable system for ship control system design and operation. Finally, future theory and method research on modeling and simulation, multidisciplinary analysis and design, information-oriented control, real-time optimization algorithms, as well as assessment and validation is suggested to be strengthened.
