In this paper a theory is presented to analyze the end-to-end gain equalization scheme for a chain of erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs). We provide closed-form expressions for the maximum number of amplifiers that can be cascaded with and without end-to-end gain equalization. Given these expressions we are able to quantify the increase in number of amplifiers achieved by employing this gain equalization scheme. Results suggest a potential 2-4 fold increase in transmission distance beyond that allowed in the unequalized system.
