The simulation includes fiber attenuation, dispersion, non-linearities and amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) with system parameters representative of today's installed WDM fibre network systems. Through the simulations, optimum average dispersion and signal power levels are determined and, finally, signal degradation with increasing transmission distance is predicted. As an example we show the results for a four-channel WDM system with one soliton channel and three NRZ channels. The nonlinear effects included in the simulation are self-phase modulation (SPM), cross-phase modulation (XPM), fourwave mixing (FWM) and stimulated Raman scattering (SRS).
