High-speed electric machines are becoming increasingly important and utilized in many applications. This paper addresses the considerations and challenges of the rotor design of high-speed surface permanent magnet machines. The paper focuses particularly on mechanical aspects of the design. Special attention is given to the rotor sleeve design including thickness and material. Permanent magnet design parameters are discussed. Surface permanent magnet rotor dynamic considerations and challenges are also discussed.
