Railcars for regional no-electrified rail lines typically use powertrains composed by an internal combustion engine coupled to a mechanical transmission. Since they are normally employed on short distances with many stops, different level of hybridization may be considered, in order to recover during braking at least part of the kinetic energy of the train. Additionally, to further reduce the environmental impact, the replacement of the internal combustion engine with a Fuel-Cell system fed by hydrogen can be considered. The aim of this work is to preliminary size a hybrid architecture based on a Fuel Cell system, in order to evaluate its potential benefits for the regional railway sector. In particular, an existing railcar and an Italian line in operation were taken as reference.
