Start-up capability of line-start permanent magnet synchronous motors greatly depends on the value of rotor cage resistance. This paper proves that there is an optimal value for cage resistance which results in an improved start-up performance of the motor. Therefore, based on average torque model of the motor during its asynchronous mode of operation a formula is derived to obtain the optimal value of cage resistance. The magnetic and electrical saliencies are considered in the derivation by averaging d- and q-axis components of motor parameters. The accuracy of the proposed formulation is then assessed by dynamic simulations of two line-start permanent magnet motors. The effects of other motor parameters on optimal rotor resistance are also investigated. Finally, experimental results are presented to evaluate the accuracy of the simulation results and the optimal rotor resistance formulation.
