Integration of large-scale photovoltaic (PV) systems into the power grid presents challenges due to their unstable power generation and reactive power fluctuations. In this paper, static synchronous compensators (STATCOM) Operation principle was applied to inverter with a control strategy for grid-tied PV systems and is evaluated. STATCOMs address grid power quality issues by dynamically injecting or absorbing reactive power, hence increasing power quality and minimizing voltage swings. This ensures efficient power transfer and minimizes losses in the grid. Additionally, STATCOM control algorithms can be designed to improve grid stability by damping power oscillations and frequency deviations, preventing potential blackouts. Also, they can aid in frequency management, particularly when solar irradiance is fluctuating. Furthermore, advanced control strategies can coordinate STATCOM operation with maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithms in the PV system, ensuring optimal power extraction while maintaining grid stability and power quality. This paper presents using inverter for voltage-source converter (VSC) control evaluating their effectiveness based on grid conditions, PV system size, and desired functionalities.
