Summary form only given. One of the main drawbacks of vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) is undesirable lasing in many transverse modes. Their excitation depends on distributions of both parts (real and imaginary) of the complex index of refraction, i.e. on both the index guiding and the gain guiding effects, which in turn are related to profiles of temperature and carrier concentration. The comprehensive self-consistent model of gain-guided (GG) VCSELs is used to determine the above profiles.
