The multi-mode regional rail transit system (MRRTS) includes railway mode and urban rail transit mode. It has diversified passenger travel demands and complicated travel process. As different modes have separate ticket type, current trip classification is limited in addressing the interconected characteristics. In this paper, the trip classification includes commuter trip familiar with MRRTS, other trip familiar with MRRTS and unfamiliar trip with MRRTS. Moreover, the AFC data is mined to establish a trip classification method in urban rail transit system. In addition, trip classification in the railway system is carried out combined with questionnaire investigation and ticket data. Furthermore, the trip of the Chongqing MRRTS is classified by the proposed method, and the result of trip classification is consistent with the main characteristics of rail transit commuting trips. The study breaks through the independence of different tickets among different modes, which enrich the research of passenger trip classification and is important for the further analysis of passenger path selection in the MRRTS.
