With the development of remarkable urbanization for the past thirty years in China, traffic problems like congestion, accidents and environmental pollution have risen and worsen in nearly every metropolis. Traditional solutions such as broadening roads, building expressways and cloverleaf intersections have shown their limitations. Therefore, the Intelligent Transport System emerged at a historic moment. This paper discusses the dilemma of metropolitan traffic in China, analyses the background and trend of Intelligent Transportation System(ITS), summarizes the application of ITS in China and proposes advice for the development of the next generation of ITS in China in several aspects, such as building the intelligent control centers of the city traffic, achieving a timely feedback of the traffic conditions, optimizing the combination of various transport means, promoting the quality of public transportation, the efficiency of infrastructure, and the Internet of Things(IoT) technology used in the ITS, to achieve the information sharing and cooperation between people, vehicles and roads, alleviating traffic congestions and lowering the energy consumption and pollution caused by transportation.
