Emission reduction and system efficiency improvement have been the main objectives recently driving research and development efforts in the aviation industry. Hybrid turboelectric propulsion systems have the potential benefits of reducing fuel consumption thanks to the use of high-efficiency electrical components and proper control strategy of the engine and electrical storage.In the context of hybrid electric drivetrains for ground vehicles, many studies have been dedicated to the development of optimal control strategies that determine the optimal power split between the internal combustion engine and the electric power system. Based upon the recent developments in this field, this paper describes the development and implementation of a supervisory energy and thermal management strategy for a turboelectric propulsion system for commercial aviation. The supervisory control is designed starting from the formulation of a constrained optimal control problem, then solved by applying the Pontryagin Minimum Principle to obtain a solution for real-time implementation. Simulation results are compared against Dynamic Programming as a benchmark to evaluate the optimality of the proposed approach.
