In majority of automotive transmission systems, one of the main power loss sources is the loaded gear mesh. High power losses lead to high energy consumption, elevated temperatures, early oil aging, increased failure risk and high cooling requirements. In many cases, design criteria such as load capacity predominate the gear design. Those design criteria mostly counteract the highest possible efficiency. Rapid transition of automotive industry towards electrification demands high efficiency of each sub system towards better performance of vehicle as every unit of power coming from battery is precious. In this paper, the influence of gear geometry parameters on gear mesh efficiency is discussed.Present study deals with the calculation of gear mesh efficiency for a parallel axis gear mesh using 3D FEA based software called GSAM. A DOE for gear designs is generated considering gear module, pressure angle, helix angle and face width to estimate the gear mesh efficiency. The paper provides an understanding on critical gear tooth parameters to enhance the efficiency of a gear mesh in a transmission.
