At the 2020 ICNS conference the paper "Distributed Mobility Anchoring Using LISP Mobile Node" [1] described how LISP-based regional mobility anchors could be deployed in a distributed fashion, following the principles in "Distributed Mobility Anchoring" [2] and "Distributed Mobility Management: Current Practices and Gap Analysis" [3]. Following this approach, a Mobile Node (MN) registers with its LISP regional mobility anchor once it attaches to a terrestrial access network in that region. This approach follows "LISP Mobile Node" [4] where the MN would have an on-board Ingress/Egress Tunnel Routers (xTRs) for each access network. After further consideration we have determined that it would be useful to investigate combining aspects of "Ground-based LISP for the Aeronautical Telecommunications Network" [5] with our Distributed Mobility Anchoring Using the LISP Mobile Node [1] approach. This paper maintains the distributed mobility anchoring paper architecture described in [1] but instead of having xTRs on board the Mobile Node, xTRs are deployed in the ground Access Networks. We call these xTRs "Access Network xTRs" (AN-xTRs).We believe there are three significant advantages to our approach. Firstly, the approach can be implemented with established protocols using Open Source or COTS products. Secondly, the approach does not require any changes to the existing functions of the access networks. Thirdly, the approach sends IPv6 packets over the Air/Ground Link in a bandwidth-efficient manner.
