High performance computing systems (HPCS) require increased memory access bandwidth and reduced latency to solve difficult computing problems. High speed optical burst switched interconnection technologies are being developed which promise increased bandwidth and scalability, lower power and lower cost than conventional electrically mediated interconnection in scaled systems. This paper addresses the context of development for these platforms and highlights recent developments.
