Surface-relief gratings with /spl sim/1-/spl mu/m features were directly fabricated on the end facet of an optical fiber by vacuum-ultraviolet F/sub 2/-laser ablation, demonstrating a rapid single-step and flexible way to shape optical-fiber-based integrated photonic components.
