Summary form only given. Laser ablation using femtosecond ultrashort pulses has been paid much attention due to its unique features of ultrashort pulsed laser ablation. Here, we will report on the TiO/sub 2/ crystal ablation because only two photons is required for electrons to be excited by a titanium sapphire laser. The two-photon absorption process is dominant in the TiO/sub 2/ ablation because the cross-section of the two-photon absorption for TiO/sub 2/ is much larger than the multiphoton processes that require 4 or 5 photons like SiO/sub 2/. We have investigated ablation characteristics and the results of surface micro-structuring to titanium oxide rutile crystal and metal crystals (Au, Ag, Cu) using an ultrashort pulsed titanium sapphire laser based chirped pulse amplification system with a repetition rate of 1 kHz.
