In this paper, a new design of PMSM based on soft magnetic composite materials (SMCs) is proposed, which benefits higher torque density and lower torque ripple. Its stator is made of SMC and designed into 3D shape, compared with the normal 2D one consisted of laminated silicon steel sheets. In this study, stator pole of the proposed PMSM is shortened in order to place the coil and reduce the volume. Three comparative prototypes, namely, the silicon steel one, the SMC-2D one and the SMC-3D one, have been designed and manufactured, both FEA and experimental results validate the performance superiority of the proposed PMSM.
