Flat ultra-broad continua extending from IR to the near UV have been obtained in interaction of unamplified femtosecond pulses from a Ti:sapphire laser in narrow-core holey fibers. We report here on applying such broadband radiation generated in a weakly birefringent MF to measure impurity absorption in a doped optical fiber. The advantages of the measurement technique include high brightness of the source and efficient coupling of light into the doped fiber.
