With an increasing number of on-road vehicles, there is an increasing need to save time for drivers and travelers without waiting in long lines or stop at every toll booth. This research study intends to develop an upgraded FasTag system, which eliminates the need for toll booths. The proposed automated toll collection system is developed by using vehicle number recognition, which reads vehicle license plates from images using OpenCV and Tesseract OCR Engine. This can be accomplished via human agents or highly advanced smart technology that recognizes automobiles in real-time environment based on the license plates. The proposed technology detects number plates, identifies the vehicle based on the license plate number, and then sends the appropriate toll amount as an SMS to the car owner for payment purpose.
