The transportation sector remains a major contributor to greenhouse emissions (GHG). Zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs), particularly battery electric buses (BEBs), present a crucial solution to mitigate environmental degradation and fossil fuel dependence. However, effective infrastructure planning is imperative for widespread deployment. This study examines the impact of idling on fleets like school buses to inform infrastructure sizing. Employing regression analysis, it quantifies idling energy consumption at 6.35 kWh/hour, factoring in vehicle specifications and operations. Notably, idling accounts for 30.7% of total operation time across fleets. Consequently, this translates to 20 kWh daily energy loss, diminishing range by 25 miles/30% per charge for Type A buses. Incorporating idling-induced energy consumption into transition planning is crucial for accurately sizing infrastructure and addressing idling in ZEV adoption. Reducing idling could potentially reduce upstream GHG emissions from 13 to 115 tons annually.
